Nagakunda

Restoration and rejuvenation of the Nagakunda Stepwell in Sudi completed and inaugurated by Karnataka Tourism Minister H.K. Patil , March 30th, 2026

On March 30, GWS played a key role in supporting the restoration of the historic Nagakunda Stepwell in Sudi, a 10th–11th century Kalyani Chalukya-era water structure. The project transformed a neglected monument into a restored heritage site, preserving its architectural significance while re-establishing its role as a functional water resource for the community.

The restoration involved extensive conservation efforts, including the removal of dense vegetation and accumulated debris, stabilization and reconstruction of damaged stonework, restoration of sandstone stairways, and the use of traditional lime-mortar techniques to preserve the monument's authenticity. Detailed documentation and surveying were also undertaken to ensure accurate conservation of the structure.

Beyond architectural restoration, the project focused on water rejuvenation and environmental sustainability. Historic water channels were revived, groundwater recharge systems were strengthened, and the stepwell's hydrological functionality was restored, allowing it to once again serve its original purpose as a water-management structure.

The initiative also enhanced visitor access and the surrounding landscape, creating opportunities for heritage tourism and community engagement. Through its contribution to every stage of the restoration process, GWS helped safeguard an important piece of Karnataka's cultural heritage while promoting conservation, sustainable water management, and local economic development.
